Triphala: what it is made of, benefits and how to take it

Triphala is a plant-based remedy known as herbal medicine, consisting of three fruits with medicinal properties. It is considered an adaptogen, a term used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine to describe non-toxic herbs that help the body fight excessive stress, strengthening resistance to stressful stimuli that can harm the body. In addition, triphala is widely used in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders and also as a rejuvenating agent.

Several laboratory studies and with animal models suggest that triphala can be a complementary therapeutic tool in the treatment of several diseases. It is important to know the components of triphala, its potential health benefits and the appropriate forms of consumption.

Triphala is a mixture of three dried fruits, which can be found in powder or capsule form. The first fruit is the Amla or Indian gooseberry (Emblica officinalis), known for its high concentration of vitamin C and dietary fiber, being used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat digestive problems such as gastritis. The second fruit is the Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), also known as the "King of Medicines" due to its medicinal properties. Haritaki is used both internally and externally, helping to heal wounds, fighting fungal infections, inflammation of the oral mucosa, in addition to having rejuvenating, astringent and laxative effects. The third fruit is Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellerica), which promotes longevity, strengthening the immune system, healthy gastrointestinal function, and stress relief.
