Ophthalmologist Tatiana Leão warned that human hands can carry various types of infectious agents, including viruses such as adenovirus, herpes virus and even the coronavirus.

She explained that eye contact with viruses and bacteria can result in conjunctivitis, which, if not treated properly, can lead to severe inflammation. The ophthalmologist also warned that reckless manipulation of the eyes with the hands can even cause blindness.
