Intertrigo: what it is, symptoms, causes and treatment

Intertrigo is an inflammation that affects areas of skin folds, manifesting as a red rash. This condition can occur anywhere on the skin where there is close contact between two areas and where moisture is common.

Intertrigo is often seen in places such as the creases of the neck, armpits, under and between the breasts, folds of the belly, between the buttocks, genital area, inner thighs, and between the toes.

Babies are especially susceptible to intertrigo because of their delicate skin and increased moisture caused by salivation and diapering.

In such cases, it is common to find inflammation in the buttocks or groin area (diaper rash), in the folds of the neck and in the arms and legs.

However, intertrigo can occur at any age. People with obesity, diabetes, and/or weakened immune systems due to illness or medication use are more likely to develop this condition.

In addition, those who use splints or braces, have prosthetic limbs (artificial limbs) and/or are exposed to high temperatures and humidity are also more likely to suffer from inflammation.
