According to some studies and researchers, matcha tea can have positive effects in reducing the symptoms of depression.
It's true that a study published in the scientific journal Nutrients in January indicated that powdered matcha tea may have positive effects in managing depression and stress. However, it is important to note that this research was conducted on mice, not humans.
According to the researchers, the study showed that matcha tea may have the ability to boost mood and cognitive function through activation of dopaminergic neural networks. Furthermore, the results suggested that matcha tea may help to improve depressive symptoms in rats that were previously subjected to the stress of social isolation.
How was the study done?
The researchers led by Dr. Yuki Kurauchi of Kumamoto University conducted a study in rats to investigate the effects of powdered matcha tea on depression related to the stress of social isolation.
During the study, stress-susceptible mice were given an oral suspension of matcha tea, while stress-tolerant mice served as the control group. Results showed that administration of matcha tea apparently reduced levels of depression in the stress-susceptible rats, as evidenced by tail suspension tests, which are commonly used to assess depression in rats.
According to Dr. Kurauchi, matcha tea decreased immobility time only in stress-susceptible mice that experienced more intense stress due to social isolation and exhibited depression-like behavior compared to stress-tolerant mice.
Furthermore, analysis of the rat brains revealed an activation of the prefrontal cortex and the nucleus accumbens in rats susceptible to stress after ingestion of matcha tea. These areas play an important role in the dopaminergic circuit and are involved in controlling dopamine levels in the brain.
However, since the study was conducted on rats and not humans, more research needs to be done to determine whether matcha tea can actually be effective in treating depression in humans and how it can be used for this purpose.
Additional studies on the subject can provide valuable insights for the development of new antidepressants. However, it is important to emphasize that, at the moment, the qualified professional help of a psychologist and/or psychiatrist is essential for the adequate treatment of depression.
While we await new research, it is imperative that people suffering from depression or who have suspicious symptoms seek professional support. A psychologist and/or psychiatrist can provide appropriate treatment, tailored to each person's individual needs. Depression is a complex condition that requires a multidisciplinary approach to achieve recovery.
