Inclusive Sports

National Football Day

When we talk about sports, what is the first one that comes to your mind? Surely, it's soccer. That's because soccer has established itself as the most popular sport in Brazil and the world.

Soccer had its origins in England in 1863, but in Brazil, it became an official sport only in 1894. Since then, due to the admiration of Brazilians for the sport, Brazil became known as the country of soccer.

According to Professor Osvaldo Siqueira, the coordinator of youth development at Grêmio Football Club, soccer is one of the most inclusive and integrating sports in the world.

"From a social perspective, soccer is a sport that allows people from different backgrounds to come together and participate collectively.

It is a sport that enables the formation of mixed teams, with exclusive participation of men, women, parents with children, in accordance with the organization of the activity."

Furthermore, Siqueira highlights that, in addition to leisure, soccer is capable of improving people's health.

Just like any other sport, when practiced regularly and appropriately, soccer contributes to muscle strengthening, improved respiratory capacity, better balance, coordination, and agility, as well as preventing sedentary lifestyle and chronic diseases.

Want to start playing soccer?

For those who do not yet practice the sport - and even for those who already do - the coordinator of youth development at Grêmio offers some tips.

First and foremost, he emphasizes that anyone should engage in regular physical exercise, as long as it is guided and supervised by professionals, and most importantly:

  • you should choose a sport that you enjoy. Now, regarding soccer, Siqueira highlights the following recommendations: Check your health condition, that is, whether you are a healthy person or if you have any limitations to practice the sport. Determine the intensity of the exercises. Specifically in soccer, it is necessary to take certain precautions, such as paying attention to specific postures to avoid injuries. Use appropriate clothing and footwear. Hydrate yourself well before, during, and after the activity to prevent dehydration. Be cautious about having heavy meals before and after practice - always opt for light foods. Perform a proper warm-up to prevent injuries. Use sunscreen whenever necessary. Use lip balm on cold days to prevent dryness.

Soccer is synonymous with passion

For Osvaldo Siqueira, the word that sums up the sport is passion. Like Siqueira, thousands of people around the world carry the love for the sport and their respective teams since childhood. The professor mentions that soccer has been present in his life since early childhood, as he spent his childhood following his father, who was a soccer player.
